Home Theater Project

In 2014 I began this project.  In order to start building a room though, I needed to do plenty of additional work finishing other areas of my basement.  Once I had a workshop to a useable state and some storage areas created, I could begin clearing out all the stuff in the theater room area, and working on the theater room itself.

I chose to go with steel studs for most of the room as I had used elsewhere in the basement.  They are very easy to work with, and will not rot should the basement ever become damp.  The front wall was to be made from finger jointed wood studs for straightness, and so screws can be easily ran into it for mounting items like the eventual TV to be installed.

Once done with the framing, I sheeted the walls with a combination of plywood and MDO board.  The MDO is as smooth as drywall, but has the strength of plywood, which is great for mounting things too it, or surviving things banging into it.  I then proceeded to install Roxul insulation in all the walls, and in the ceiling.  The Roxul is resistant to moisture, has excellent acoustic properties, and is firm enough to hold itself in place while installing it.  I really enjoy working with the stuff, and it is amazing the improvement it can make in acoustics.

I finally reached a point where I can place some equipment and start doing some listening.  I am going for 7.1 surround sound, and I want to do some trial runs with speaker placement and TV placement prior to proceeding forward on permanent locations for everything.

Here is the current state of the theater.  It is usable, but obviously far from perfect.
